Though Mandolin is primarily a source for previously loved books, we are proud to stock new books that arise from the life of our neighbourhood.  Homes is the debut novel of Winnie Canuel, a talented Edmonton teacher and writer, based on the life of Abu Bakr al Rabeeah, a young Syrian refugee who attends our local high school.  This unique book is an extremely readable and accessible way to become educated about the Syrian cirisis and the experiences of those who have fled their homeland and found safety in Canada.  It is a beautiful portrait of a gentle young man who has survived trauma and emerged with a generous and joyful spirit.
