Where do our books come from?

Mandolin Books and Coffee Company is interested in buying high quality used books. Here’s what you can expect when selling your books to us:

  • There’s no appointment required, but we ask you to drop your books off to be evaluated. This gives us the time to assess the condition of each book, and compare with our current inventory.
  • We will carefully label your boxes or bags with your name, phone number and the date of arrival. We will phone you once we've had time to look at them and make our purchasing decisions.
  • Due to the high volume of incoming books, it may take several weeks for us to complete this process.
  • Occasionally, we must pause the flow of books coming into the store in order to make room for more boxes, or at certain times of the year when the book buyer is unavailable. You are invited to phone and check if we are accepting books for purchase before loading your car.
  • Our policy for most books is to pay approximately 10% of the original cover price, or 15% if you prefer to be paid in store credit.  However, there are many exceptions to this rule.  If you accept store credit, we will load up a gift card for you which can be used for anything in the store.
  • And please, make it easier on everyone by not using large boxes to pack books. We’ve found banker’s boxes work best.

What we buy:

Almost any category of used books is fine. We accept either hard cover or paperback – it’s the condition we care about more!

Items we do not buy:

  • Encyclopedias and Dictionaries
  • Reader’s Digest Condensed Books
  • Ex-Library Books
  • Audio Cassettesor CD's
  • DVD's

I Don’t Want to Lug Those Books Back to My Car!

Unfortunately, we can’t buy every book we see. Space on our shelves is limited and we are selective. Condition and subject matter are the most common reasons for us to reject a book. Our current inventory is also important, as we try to avoid excessive duplication. If you would rather not carry the rejected books back home, we are happy to dispose of them for you.  We regularly donate our damaged, overstocked and unwanted books to local charities.
